Below are some promotional images that I shot for the Bulfinch Hotel on Merrimac Street in Boston. It's located in the historic Bulfinch Triangle neighborhood, hence the name. The hotel is in a fully restored 19th century flat-iron building within walking distance to Faneuil Hall, the North End, Government Center, TD Garden, New England Aquarium and the Boston Common. That's why the restaurant is called Flat Iron Tapas Bar & Lounge. I should have take a shot of the new menu to display here because it sounded amazing and I'm a big tapas fan anyway. Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection

Currently at the Museum of Fine Arts is an Exhibit called Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds really interesting. It features portraits, still lifes, landscapes, documentary images, and experimental abstractions by more than 100 different artists, grouped thematically to create visual “conversations.” Nineteenth-century works are compared with modern, European juxtaposed with American, close-ups paired with distant views, and staged subjects alongside documentary. The exhibition is selected from the wide-ranging art holdings of Bank of America, one of the largest and most comprehensive corporate collections of photography in the world. I just shot some images for the Langham Hotel in Boston. It's a charming hotel in downtown Boston's financial district. Given the size and intimacy of Boston it's in a great location to take in some of the great sites and dine at some of Boston's fantastic eatery's as well. It just outside Post Office Square. Close to Faneuil Hall, The North End and The New England Aquarium among other things. The staff was a pleasure to work with and they have a great team to help you explore the city if you're a tourist. The hotel has some great dining options as well. Cafe Fleuri and Bond Restaurant. I recently shot a pretty cool, classy, asian inspired decor restaurant called OM in Harvard Square. The even made Conde Nast Traveler's Hot list. Whoever the architectural designer was did an outstanding job and definitely had a flare for the oriental which makes for great photography. I can't vouch for the quality of the food. At least not yet anyway, as I do plan to dine there in the future, but sometimes a restaurant pulls you in because it's visually appealing. I mentioned last week that I had an amazing trip to India. As with any cultural experience the most interesting part to me is the people. Some find portrait photography difficult when visiting other countries, thinking that they are invading peoples privacy. It's amazing what a little personal interest can accomplish. Even with a language barrier the power of a smile and learning a few words in the native tongue can really put people at ease. Almost all of the headshot portraits that I shot in India where of ones that I made the effort to have a connection with. The personal interest came first and the photography was an after thought. "Oh by the way can I take a picture". In recent visits to Mozambique, Morocco, and India this has been my approach. To show a sincere interest in people, make a connection and then ask for a portrait. In the end I always try to show them the result which makes them happy. Well I just got back from two weeks in amazing India. By amazing I mean dirty, filthy, dusty, grungy, grimy, unclean, unhygienic, unsanitary India. I guess that's part of the charm. I did some editorial and personal work while I was there. It was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to share some of the images here on the blog. Avedon Fashion 1944-2000

He was an American photographer born in 1923 during the great depression. It was said of his work that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century." In 1946, Avedon had set up his own studio and began providing images for magazines including Vogue and Life. He soon became the chief photographer for Harper's Bazaar. In 1966, Avedon left Harper's Bazaar to work as a staff photographer for Vogue magazine. From there he photographed most of the covers from 1973-1988 as the lead photographer. His life and story is very interesting and inspired the musical Funny Face in 1957.

Great wedding, funny story. Evan and Stephanie got married on Friday and looked beautiful together. Everything went off without a hitch except for one "minor" detail. Months and months ago when I met with them to discuss the details of the big day, we decided on doing outdoor pics at a great location other than where the ceremony or reception were to be held. We kicked around a few ideas following our meeting and eventually decided on what I thought was The Stevens Estate in North Andover. A great choice! So, the day before the wedding I did my customary scout out to check out the lighting and map out a plan. I was ready! The wedding day arrived and following the ceremony a four car caravan headed off. Three cars arrived at The Stevens Estate with the fourth no where to be found. The Bride and Groom where at another location called Stevens Coolidge Place. Yep, signals crossed. Well, it wouldn't be a true wedding day without some improvasation. Once we figured out what happened, the other three cars were off to the new location and we were without a plan. As it turned out, the Stevens Coolidge Place was beautiful and so were Evan and Stephanie. Here are a few shots from the day. Enjoy!

It was Friday September 3, 2010 and everyone was worried about Hurricane Earl hitting the New England area. Everyone except for Mike and Ann who got married at the Hilton Boston Financial District. They were calm and cool and had no worries on the their wedding day. It basically turned out to be a nothing storm. We dodged a bit of rain but nothing major. We had the opportunity to shoot at Rowes Warf and walk through the newly designed Greenway in Boston. It was a great time and we ended up at The Black Rose for the reception. John & Britt rock!. They picked an awesome spot on the ocean on a beautiful day. It was Odiorne State Park near Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the Seacoast Science Center. They day turned out perfect although with a little bit of harsh light because of the midday sun. We found some gorgeous light at sunset as you'll see below. Anyway, John and Britt make a great couple and planned a stunning wedding from the dresses to the shoes to all of the details at the reception. Britt's got style! Summer has arrived here in New England in full force. I was on my way to Juliano and Mellissa's engagement shoot in Charlestown at the Bunker Hill Monument Park. It was two hours before sunset and it looked like night time because of the dark clouds hovering over Boston. Then the rain came rolling in. Oddly enough as I pulled in front of the park it stopped and began to clear. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful evenings we've had this season not to mentioned working with a great couple who were so happy together. Castello di Amorosa

Fresh back from California. Spent a few days in San Francisco and Napa Valley. Amazing! One of my favorite vineyards was Castello di Amorosa. www.castellodiamorosa.com. It's located between St. Helena and Calistoga. Great wines! Especially the dessert wines. One note about wedding photography, there are only 3 wineries in Napa Valley that have permits to have weddings. Can you believe that? It's a shame because there are so many beautiful venues. This is one of them but guess what? Not allowed. They opened in 2007. Here are a few images from our visit to Castello di Amorosa which means "the loving castle".

iPad Rocks!!!

Well, iPad arrived on schedule on April 3, 2010 and I have to say it's amazing! Since this is a photography blog and primarily a wedding photography blog at that, I just wanted to write a quick post on how iPad is fitting in to my business. First, just a quick note, you probably already notice that I've left off the article "the" before iPad. That's the way Apple is doing it so I thought I'd follow suit. I guess they think iPad should be referred to like a person. It's alive! Anyway, iPad is an amazing presentation tool. The screen is so sharp and crisp that I was stunned looking at my own portfolio all over again. I recently had my first opportunity to show it off to some potential clients and they loved it. If I'm not mistaken, with iPad in hand one of them said "These pictures are freakin awesome!" I can't wait to show it off again. I'm planning to show some sample slideshows as well as sample album pages to give my clients a taste of what their final product will look like. If you don't have iPad yet, I suggest you go and get one!

Best of 2009: My favorite Image

I took thousands of images in 2009. From weddings to portraits to travel and personal work. The thought of perusing thousands of images in search of my favorite was daunting. So that’s why I didn’t do it. It order to find my favorite one, I thought about one simple thing. Which image impacted me the most. I know this is a wedding photography blog but my favorite shot from 2009 was of my niece Scarlett. Oh, and because this is a wedding photography blog, I’ve also included 3 of my favorite wedding images from 2009. Enjoy!

Best of 2009: Emotions

After shooting a wedding, there is such eager anticipation to see how the images came out. As I view the images on my beloved Macbook Pro, scrolling from one image to the next, I often freeze with a gasp. That’s when I know “I got the shot”. These are often my favs from a wedding. If they can make me stop and think back to what exactly was going on in that brief moment in time, it’s a great shot. Here are a few of these from 2009.

Here are just a few of the grooms I photographed this past year. I have to say all of the grooms and brides for that matter were a pleasure to work with and lots of fun. One of the great things about photographing weddings is meeting interesting people. The Faces of Fez

I just arrived back from Fez, Morocco. What an amazing place! It was like getting into a time machine and traveling back a thousand years. I was captivated by the people and challenged at the fact that they emphatically don't like their picture taken. With much effort and personal interest I was able to break down some barriers and connect with some of the local people. Here are a few images I call The Faces of Fez. I hope you find the people as intriguing as I did.

Wow! When I first booked this wedding I was thinking that an evening wedding in December here in New England would not be fun with sunset at 4:10 and it being too cold to shoot outside without freezing the bride and groom. I was wrong. James and Erin were such a pleasure to work with and a great couple. Newport, Rhode Island is enchanting no matter what season. The reception was at the Viking Hotel and it turned out beautiful. Props to the staff for doing a fantastic job. Congrats to James and Erin. Here are a few of my favs from the day.

We had a great time with Scott and Lauren on their engagement shoot. They were so relaxed and fun to be with. It turned out to be a beautiful Fall day here in the greater Boston area. We visited Great Brook Farm State Park for the shoot in Carlisle. Their wedding will be at Stowe Acres Country Club in Stowe next year. Here are a few images from the day. Enjoy!

Derek & Gabrielle were the cutest couple. It was a gorgeous Fall day up in Meredith, New Hampshire. We had a great time getting to know them and chatting about their wedding next year at the Waukewan Golf Club in Meredith. Don't ask me how to pronounce it. Gabby told me like six times and I still can't get it right. Anyway, I hope you enjoy a sample of the images from their engagement shoot.

What a beautiful Fall day we had for Brian & Lilac's wedding at the Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham (that was a mouthful!). Otherwise known as Stonehurst Waltham, the estate is an old mansion built in the 1880's. This 19th Century country house was the backdrop for their big day. We had lot's of fun and lot's of laughs.
