I mentioned last week that I had an amazing trip to India. As with any cultural experience the most interesting part to me is the people. Some find portrait photography difficult when visiting other countries, thinking that they are invading peoples privacy. It's amazing what a little personal interest can accomplish. Even with a language barrier the power of a smile and learning a few words in the native tongue can really put people at ease. Almost all of the headshot portraits that I shot in India where of ones that I made the effort to have a connection with. The personal interest came first and the photography was an after thought. "Oh by the way can I take a picture". In recent visits to Mozambique, Morocco, and India this has been my approach. To show a sincere interest in people, make a connection and then ask for a portrait. In the end I always try to show them the result which makes them happy. The next time you're off on a cultural adventure try that approach and I guarantee it will work for you. Thanks for visiting Darren Pellegrino Photography.
