Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection

Currently at the Museum of Fine Arts is an Exhibit called Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds really interesting. It features portraits, still lifes, landscapes, documentary images, and experimental abstractions by more than 100 different artists, grouped thematically to create visual “conversations.” Nineteenth-century works are compared with modern, European juxtaposed with American, close-ups paired with distant views, and staged subjects alongside documentary. The exhibition is selected from the wide-ranging art holdings of Bank of America, one of the largest and most comprehensive corporate collections of photography in the world. The Griffin Museum of Photography

Darren Pellegrino Photography: Brides Choice Award!

I'm definitely not one who likes to toot his own horn if you know what I mean. Because of that I was reluctant to do this post but I realize that when awards or recognition come your way they can instill confidence in others. They often speak to your credibility, reliability and quality. So I figured I would post my recent 2011 Brides Choice Award. This is my third BCA in as many years from the WeddingWire network. Here is what they say is deserving of the award. Darren Pellegrino Photography: Balanced Heath

Balanced Health is located on Chauncy Street in Boston. Instead of me explaining what they do here is a quote from their website. They are a "mindbody healthcare company dedicated to providing evidence-based mindbody therapies that are proven safe and effective to complement traditional medical and clinical care." I don't really know what that means but they do it and do it well. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and accommodating and they have a beautifully decorated space right in downtown Boston. Scoozi is a cool little Boston Pizzeria. They have two locations. One on Newbury Street and the other on Comm Ave right in the heart of Boston University. They do more than just pizza. Darren Pellegrino Photography: Langham Hotel

I just shot some images for the Langham Hotel in Boston. It's a charming hotel in downtown Boston's financial district. Given the size and intimacy of Boston it's in a great location to take in some of the great sites and dine at some of Boston's fantastic eatery's as well. It just outside Post Office Square. Close to Faneuil Hall, The North End and The New England Aquarium among other things. The staff was a pleasure to work with and they have a great team to help you explore the city if you're a tourist. The hotel has some great dining options as well. Cafe Fleuri and Bond Restaurant. I haven't been to either to recommend the food but Bond is super chic and with a great bar scene. Here are a few images from the shoot that show what Langham has to offer. Darren Pellegrino Photography: OM Restaurant

I recently shot a pretty cool, classy, asian inspired decor restaurant called OM in Harvard Square. The even made Conde Nast Traveler's Hot list. Whoever the architectural designer was did an outstanding job and definitely had a flare for the oriental which makes for great photography. I can't vouch for the quality of the food. At least not yet anyway, as I do plan to dine there in the future, but sometimes a restaurant pulls you in because it's visually appealing. I really liked the feel of this place so give it a try and leave a comment with some "feadback". Yes, I spelled it that way on purpose. Sorry for the bad pun. Darren Pellegrino Photography: India Portraits

I mentioned last week that I had an amazing trip to India. As with any cultural experience the most interesting part to me is the people. Some find portrait photography difficult when visiting other countries, thinking that they are invading peoples privacy. It's amazing what a little personal interest can accomplish. Even with a language barrier the power of a smile and learning a few words in the native tongue can really put people at ease. Almost all of the headshot portraits that I shot in India where of ones that I made the effort to have a connection with. The personal interest came first and the photography was an after thought. "Oh by the way can I take a picture". In recent visits to Mozambique, Morocco, and India this has been my approach. To show a sincere interest in people, make a connection and then ask for a portrait. In the end I always try to show them the result which makes them happy. dp Photography in Amazing India!

Well I just got back from two weeks in amazing India. By amazing I mean dirty, filthy, dusty, grungy, grimy, unclean, unhygienic, unsanitary India. I guess that's part of the charm. I did some editorial and personal work while I was there. It was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to share some of the images here on the blog. One of my personal projects was to shoot some headshot portraits of some of the unique and interesting people in India. With their permission of course. Avedon Fashion 1944-2000

There's only one week left if you want to check out some of Richard Avedon's famous works that will be on display at the Museum of fine Arts in Boston. He was an American photographer born in 1923 during the great depression. It was said of his work that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century." In 1946, Avedon had set up his own studio and began providing images for magazines including Vogue and Life. He soon became the chief photographer for Harper's Bazaar. In 1966, Avedon left Harper's Bazaar to work as a staff photographer for Vogue magazine. From there he photographed most of the covers from 1973-1988 as the lead photographer. His life and story is very interesting and inspired the musical Funny Face in 1957.

Ok, so I haven't been blogging any of my commercial work lately. Mostly just weddings and engagements to give my clients a taste of my style and for them to be able to see my most recent work. I've decided to put some of my recent commercial work out there as well. So here goes. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a great North End Italian restaurant called Euno. Yes, I have actually eaten here. It's quaint and the food is excellent. If you're planning a night out in Boston and you're looking for a a good eat, definitely check them out. Jason & Heidi were married on New Years Day at the Atkinson Country Club in Atkinson, New Hampshire. I don't know how they pulled it off but it was over 50 degrees here in New England that day. Pretty rare for January. They made a beautiful couple and had a blast together on their wedding day. All the best to them starting their new life together. Here are a few images from the day.
