There has been and interesting topic of late in the photo community. The city of New York is considering a law that would require a person to obtain a permit to photograph or film in public places. Here is a quote from the NY Times,
"The new rules, which were proposed by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting, would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a public place for more than 30 minutes to get a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance. The same requirements would apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment. The permits would be free."
So what do you think? They say this will not affect tourists, only photographers but how often do we travel alone, and two people shooting away would need a permit even if they are tourists. This law seems unnecessary and intrusive. It would take away the artistic expression of millions. What if this law passes and others cities adopt the same rule? The NY Times has also reported that there is a coalition of filmmakers and photographers mobilizing in protest of this potential law. If you would like to read the article click here.
